Home Moving Guide: How to Plan a Stress-Free Move Into Your New Wisconsin Home
Congratulations on your new Wisconsin home! Rob Miller and the MadCity Home Loans team share a complete countdown checklist to help you plan a smooth, organized, stress-free move.

You've found the home, closed the loan, and signed the papers. Now comes one of the most exciting (and occasionally stressful) milestones of the whole process: moving day.
At MadCity Home Loans powered by ProVisor, Inc., Rob Miller and his team love seeing clients get their keys — and they want the move to go just as smoothly as the closing did. That's why we've put together this comprehensive moving countdown guide based on what actually works for Wisconsin homeowners. Plan ahead, stay organized, and you'll be settled in before you know it.
Choosing a Moving Company
If you're hiring movers (highly recommended for larger homes or long-distance moves), do your research early — good moving companies book up fast, especially in the spring and summer months when Wisconsin home closings peak.
What to look for:
- For long-distance or out-of-state moves, confirm they're licensed for interstate moves (check FMCSA)
- Ask about storage options if there's a gap between your old home and new home
- Understand their policy for damaged items — get it in writing
- Read reviews carefully — Google, Yelp, and the BBB are good starting points
- Get at least three quotes, but don't automatically choose the cheapest — choose the most trusted
2 Months Before Moving Day
- If moving long distance, book travel arrangements and hotel accommodations
- Find new doctors, dentists, and specialists in your new area — and request medical records from your current providers
- Notify your auto, medical, homeowners, and life insurance companies of your upcoming address change — some policies may need updating
- If you have children, contact their current school and reach out to schools in the new district for enrollment information; request copies of academic and health records
- Book your moving company early, especially if your closing is between April and August
6 Weeks Before Moving Day
Transfer Utility Services
Contact your utility providers to transfer or set up service at your new home. Aim to activate utilities 1–2 days before your move-in date so everything is functional when you arrive:
- Electricity
- Natural gas
- Water and sewer
- Trash and recycling pickup
- Internet and cable (book installation appointments early — these often have long lead times)
Update Your Address
File a change of address form with the U.S. Post Office online at usps.com — this forwards your mail for up to 12 months while you update individual accounts. Then contact each of the following directly:
- Social Security Administration and IRS
- DMV / Wisconsin DOT (update your driver's license and vehicle registration)
- Banks and credit card companies
- Retirement and investment account providers
- Cell phone provider
- Health, auto, and life insurance providers
- Pharmacy and doctors
- Subscription services (streaming, magazines, Amazon, etc.)
- Family and friends
Declutter Before You Pack
Before a single box gets packed, go through every room systematically — closets, drawers, the garage, the basement, the attic. Identify everything you haven't used in the past year. Moving is the perfect opportunity to downsize.
- Sell items in good condition (Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, a garage sale)
- Donate the rest — save receipts for potential tax deductions
- Dispose of anything hazardous or unusable responsibly (many municipalities have drop-off days)
Getting Ready to Pack
Gather your moving supplies well ahead of time — you'll almost always need more than you think:
- Boxes in multiple sizes (small for heavy items, large for lightweight bulky items)
- Packing tape (get extra rolls)
- Markers and labels — consider a color-coding system by room
- Bubble wrap and packing paper for fragile items
- Plastic bins for items that need extra protection
- Scissors and box cutters
- Small and large trash bags
- Sandwich bags for small hardware (screws, cords, remote controls)
Smart Packing Strategies
Packing efficiently saves time on both ends of the move:
- Pack one room at a time — don't mix rooms in a single box
- Label every box clearly with its destination room and a brief description of contents
- Heavy items go in small boxes — never fill a large box with books or canned goods
- Fragile items get extra padding — label clearly with "FRAGILE" in large letters
- Photograph fragile and expensive items before packing in case of damage claims
- Keep clothes on hangers and group them in large trash bags — they can hang directly in your new closets
- Pack a "first night" box for each person with essentials: toiletries, phone charger, change of clothes, medications, coffee maker
- Important documents (passports, birth certificates, social security cards, closing documents) should be packed separately and transported by you — not the movers
- Electronics accessories (cords, remotes, attachments) go in labeled sandwich bags so nothing gets tangled or lost
- Photograph complicated electronics or furniture before disassembling so you can reassemble easily
- Never pack flammable items — gasoline, propane, aerosol cans, and other hazardous materials must be disposed of or transported separately
1 Week Before Moving Day
- Confirm all details with your moving company — date, time, directions, payment, contact numbers
- Finish packing everything except daily essentials
- Create a move-in day checklist — knowing your game plan reduces stress significantly
- Charge all devices
- Arrange childcare and/or pet care for moving day — it makes everything safer and easier
- Pack suitcases for each family member with 3–4 days of essentials
- Confirm that your internet and utility installations are scheduled
Pets and Kids on Moving Day
Moving day is busy, loud, and full of open doors — not ideal for young children or animals. Whenever possible, arrange for them to spend the day with a trusted friend or family member. If pets are traveling with you for a long drive, update their microchip information with your new address before you leave, and plan stops along the route.
The Day Before: Final Walkthrough
- Check every room, drawer, cabinet, closet, pantry, refrigerator, and outdoor storage area for anything missed
- Make sure all personal essentials are easily accessible — don't bury them in the moving truck
- Have plenty of water and sports drinks ready for moving day
- Confirm payment for the movers is arranged
Moving Day!
- Get up early
- Walk through your current home with the movers as they inventory each room
- Take out all trash before movers load everything
- Before movers drive off, do a final walkthrough to ensure nothing was missed or left
- Turn off all lights, lock all doors
Arriving at Your New Home
- Review all moving paperwork and confirm payment
- Guide movers to the correct rooms for boxes and furniture
- Have heavy furniture placed before movers leave
- If any item is damaged, leave it in the packaging until you can document and file a claim
- Unpack strategically — bathrooms first, then bedrooms, then kitchen
- Change the locks as soon as possible — you don't know how many copies of the old keys are out there
